In the continuing saga of the threat to the climate from Global Warming, at last, something to laugh about. Came across this really funny and ironical piece in the Times of India today which talks about how, while we fret and fume over industries and automobiles contributing to the rising pollution, as much as fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from enteric methane from cattle and sheep – read cattle fart!

Apparently, reports Fox Newsone of the primary sources of atmospheric methane is the digestive tracts of millions of cows, sheep, pigs and, um, humans. It’s the byproduct of trillions of bacteria, properly called digestive flora, without which no mammal could get nutrition from starches and plant fibers. On the other hand, thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo flatulence contains no methane and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who emit large quantities of the harmful gas.
